High-Intensity Workouts Carry Risks, Rewards

That was all the motivation I needed to keep going," she said. Then friends and clients started asking her, "What are you doing? You're getting smaller." She credits the consistent workouts, along with sensible eating and fewer cocktails, for the results. Since starting, she says, "I watch what I eat and don't drink as much Captain and Coke." Even though the scale budged by only a few pounds in those initial 21 days, the compliments and looser clothes were proof that her body was changing in a positive way. DePaul works volleyball into workouts

For example, a recent study out of Australia found women who followed a 20-minute HIITs program lost six times more body fat than women who followed a 40-minute moderate-intensity cardio program. In another recent study, Michele Olson, a professor at Auburn University in Alabama, determined that a HIITs-style method known as Tabata blasted an average of 13.5 calories per minute compared to a mere 6 to 8 calories per minute burned in the typical cardio program. This is only part of the reason high-intensity workouts are so effective for weight loss, she said. "High-intensity exercise also has the advantage of elevating your metabolic rate post-exercise for a period of time after you stop working out so you continue to burn fat and calories at a higher rate for a long time afterwards," Olson said. "Overall, it would take five times the amount of typical cardio exercise to shed the same number of calories you can in a four-minute Tabata." Butt Trainer app review: more than 100 different exercises and workouts to get you a butt to die for

This put the entire summer in play, but it made August more important than ever -- a natural head start for freshmen, a ramp-up for upperclassmen. All of which may or may not be helpful clarification for this rather fun video DePaul posted on YouTube Wednesday: Watching that and not knowing any better, you could assume that DePaul basketball was merely goofing off on another slow August day. Instead, the volleyball was a reprieve, and a surprise one at that; the Blue Demons went to the beach assuming they were in for another sand-stuck conditioning regimen. Sand hurts, and trainer Mac Calloway frequently utilizes that fact to his advantage.
Source: http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/87195/depaul-works-volleyball-into-workout-regimen

In 2012,the ADS carried out in-competition testing at the 50th Singapore National Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championship and found that Shaifulhaq had used the substances Drostanolone and Methylhexaenamine. Shaifulhaq was banned from competition for two years, from 6 August 2012, along with six other bodybuilders. A Review Panel comprising members from the Singapore Sports Council's National Anti-Doping Advisory Board said Shaifulhaq showed little remorse for violating the period of ineligibility. It therefore recommended that Shaifulhaqs two-year period of ineligibility be restarted from 29 June 2013 the date of his participation in the 51st Singapore National Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championship 2013. He will also be ineligible to participate as an athlete or support personnel, in any sport up to and including 28 June 2015. Do Women Work Harder Than Men in Interval Workouts?

"In our study we show that individuals, if asked to run at a high intensity, will select an appropriate pace or intensity to produce an optimal cardiovascular and metabolic workout. Without having any feedback about their data, all the participants had to use to set their pace was how they felt during and how recovered they felt. "Trust that if you push yourself to run what you consider hard, you are probably at the correct intensity, and if you maintain recommended work-to-rest ratios you most likely will recover appropriately to get the most out of your workout, independent of gender," Laurent said. These findings are especially useful to runners who, out of preference or convenience, tend to do their hard workouts someplace other than the track. If you feel like you're working hard enough when doing intervals on unmeasured stretches of road or grass, you probably are, Laurent's findings suggest.
Source: http://www.runnersworld.com/workouts/do-women-work-harder-than-men-in-interval-workouts

A big issue as you age is the risk of falling. And strength training that builds muscle power helps prevent falls, he says. People should do a combination of both cardio and strength to meet those fitness goals, he says, but in general he sees an overemphasis on cardio and underemphasis on strength. The challenge, Miller says, is not deciding whether fitness needs are age-specific. Its getting people to do what they should do, at any age, to stay healthy and fit. The problem is not the exercise or the type of exercise; its the adherence or the lack of adherence to exercise that is the main issue, he says. Only about 20percent of Americans follow the government recommendations.
Source: http://www.azcentral.com/healthyliving/free/20130718fitness-age-expert-advice-cardio.html

The men also reported eating fewer calories on the day following the highest intensity workout than they did on the days following the other exercise sessions. They ate 2,000 calories during the day following the very high intensity workout, while they ate a little more than 2,300 calories during the day after the moderate exercise and more than 2,600 during the day following the resting session. SURPRISING BUT PRELIMINARY While the study shows promising cuts in calorie intake in the short-term, it's unclear whether high intensity exercise can affect longer term weight loss. David Stensel, a researcher at Loughborough University in the UK who has studied exercise's effect on food intake, cautioned that this was a small study that needs to be repeated before any conclusions can be drawn. Other studies, including Stensel's, have not shown a difference in how much people eat following a period of exercise or of rest, he said. Stensel said the findings were somewhat surprising, because his own research has not shown that people's food intake is reduced following exercise.
Source: http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/eats/high-intensity-workouts-curb-appetites-international-journal-obesity-article-1.1391264
